What Is Telehealth or E-Counselling Counselling?

Online counselling can be a wonderful solution to times when face-to-face counselling is not available. It is conducted via phone (telehealth) or a secure (PHIPA approved) video system (e-counselling) that allows you and your counsellor to connect from remote locations. Your counsellor may ask several questions to asses if telephone or online counselling is a fit for your work together. Your counsellor will be in a confidential and professional environment, on secure internet, and will talk to you via phone or video. It is recommended that you also find a confidential location to ensure confidentiality and comfort.

IS TELEHEALTH OR

E-COUNSELLING RIGHT FOR YOU?

There are various reasons one might choose online counselling. It may be temporary or it may be the permanent choice. Some of the times when online counselling can be a great asset:

  • If you live in a rural area with limited counselling options locally;

  • In the case of social distancing (such as in the case of COVID19);

  • If you would like to see a specific counsellor who does not live near you;

  • If your schedule or resources prevent you from accessing the office for face-to-face sessions.

    And more…

SOMETIMES IN-PERSON CAN BE A BETTER FIT.

There are times when your counsellor may recommend face-to-face counselling instead of, or after, online counselling. A counsellor may recommend this:

  • To allow more specialized trauma counselling can be better applied to your needs;

  • To provide more support for clients experiencing suicidal ideation;

  • To provide more specialized attunement skills;

  • To aid in communication for those uncomfortable with digital communication;

    And more…

It is important to communicate your feelings about online counselling to your counsellor so they can help get the right care for you.
